Zanzibar Fishermen Bringing In Their Catch

All That Glitters Is Gold

Fishermen in Matemwe, Zanzibar return to the ocean daily to a livelihood that has sustained communities over centuries. Departing at first light, in Dhouws, they glide silently like ghosts across the ocean. They face a tempestuous journey sailing beyond the safe proximities of the reef. Their lives are sustained by one of natures most threatened resources, their catch providing income to support their families.
At noon, villagers eagerly await for the first sighting of sails billowing in the wind, marking the return of their fishermen. All fish is sold immediately on the beach or in the official market where it is auctioned to the highest bidder. The Dhouws are moored and their sails secured for the night. The tide changes and the ocean returns to the shore of Matemwe. Photos by Rachel Ambrose.
